Reverse image search: find your photos online

A reverse image search flips the normal search around: instead of typing words and getting images back, you put in an image and get back the pages where it appears. For anyone selling photos of themselves, this is the only practical way to keep track of where things end up.

The good news: it takes ten minutes and costs nothing. The bad news comes further down, because this search misses far more than it looks like it does.

How reverse image search works

The search engine computes something like a fingerprint from your image: rough brightness distribution, edges, color areas, distinctive structures. It then compares that fingerprint against the fingerprints of every image it knows.

Two consequences follow from that, and they shape how you should use it:

First, it does not need the filename, and the data inside the file is no help to it either. That data can still give you away elsewhere, see Removing photo metadata: what is actually in there. An image someone renamed and re-uploaded still gets found. Second, it compares the whole image. A different crop, a flip, a strong color filter or a watermark across it can change that fingerprint substantially. That is why the same search sometimes finds everything and sometimes nothing.

What it reliably misses

Before you feel safe just because the search comes up empty:

• Anything behind a login. Closed forums, private groups, messaging apps. No search engine gets in there, and that is exactly where a large share of redistribution happens.
• Fresh uploads. It often takes days before a page gets indexed at all. A find today can be three weeks old, while an upload from yesterday will not show up yet.
• Heavily altered material. Cropped, flipped, recolored, built into a collage: the more it has been changed, the more likely it slips through.
• Videos. Moving footage is practically not covered by the common services. The workaround is a screenshot taken from the video.
• Sites that opt out of being indexed. Anyone who tells search engines not to index a page also will not show up in image search.

An empty result therefore means: not publicly findable. It does not mean: does not exist anywhere.

Which services are worth it

Do not use just one, use two or three. They hold different data sets, and each one finds things the others do not.

• The image search built into the major search engines. The default route. Upload an image or use the camera function inside image search. Good for sites with a mainstream audience, weaker for niche portals.
• Specialised image services. There are providers that focus on exact copies and their edits. Some also show when a match was first seen, which helps with the question of where a leak started.
• The visual search of alternative search engines. Some index sites the market leaders never cover, and are noticeably better at matching people. For this purpose they are often the most productive hit.

When you upload an image, it leaves your device. Use a preview version where possible rather than the original file at full resolution.

Your ten-minute routine

1. Pick three to five images. Not everything, you will not keep that up long-term. Take the ones that are the most widely spread: profile pictures, preview images, anything you have shown publicly yourself.
2. Cut out a distinctive detail. A detail with a clear structure, like a tattoo, a pattern on fabric, a corner of the room. A crop often hits better than the whole image, because it depends less on the overall look having changed.
3. Run both versions, the whole image and the crop, and do it across two to three services.
4. Note every find immediately, with the full address, the date and a screenshot. Not later, pages disappear.
5. Also check your username as a text search. Very many re-uploads keep the name from the watermark or from the description.
6. Set yourself a reminder. Monthly at the start, later every three months. After a release that got a lot of attention, check again after two weeks instead.

If you find something

And the uncomfortable part up front: a find is rarely a one-off. If you find one spot, plan time for a second and a third right away.

What you can skip

There are providers who run this search for money and sell automatic monitoring on top. That can take work off your hands if you publish a lot. What it cannot do is find more than the services above, because it is the same underlying data. Anyone promising to find everything and remove it completely is promising something nobody can technically deliver.
